Fog sculpture for Dry Goods Gallery

Fog scultpture for Dry Goods Gallery was the first in a programmed series presented by Dry Goods Gallery, entitled “Liminal City” which issued a call for proposals asking artists to respond to and explore themes of liminality, ambiguity, imagination, and transformation as they relate to the unique spatial, environmental, social, cultural, and historical boundary occupied by the city of Windsor.
Through Fog sculpture for Dry Goods Gallery the public, composed of unexpected passersby and regular visitors to Chance Coffee, was invited to experience the passage of time as the gallery gradually became fully immersed in fog, as well as the time required for it to fully dissipate. Once the fog disappeared, what remained was only the memory of the event in the viewer’s mind, similar to the experience of listening to a piece of music.
This work addressesed fog both as a sculptural material with unique properties and for its metaphoric meanings. Fog carries an element of mystery, an anticipation that something is about to happen. The online dictionary of symbolism associates fog with a "grey zone" between reality and unreality, as well as with the imminence of approaching death.
Dry Goods Gallery, located in a former retail display window in Ford City, is a street-facing window gallery committed to providing an inclusive and community-focused space for emerging visual arts and experimental exhibitions.
